
Getting Your Curing Right with Carbon Fiber Quartz Tubes
Anyone who’s spent time screen printing knows the struggle: you need the ink to cure all the way through, but you don’t want to fry your fabric or substrate in the process. It’s a balancing act. That’s why we use these carbon fiber heating elements wrapped in high-purity quartz. Most people are used to those standard halogen lamps with the tungsten filaments. These are different. By using a carbon fiber weave, we shift the heat into the far-infrared range. Why does that actually matter? Well, carbon fiber doesn’t need to get nearly as hot on the surface as tungsten does, but it pumps out a ton of long-wave infrared radiation. Think of it as heat that actually “soaks” into the ink. Instead of just searing the top layer, it penetrates deep into those thick deposits. You end up with a cure that’s consistent from top to bottom. Plus, the quartz tube keeps the fiber from oxidizing, making sure the heat goes exactly where it needs to—into your part. Setting them up When we’re figuring out which tubes you need, it all comes down to how fast your conveyor is moving. If you need to crank up your line speed, you’ll want more wattage per centimeter. Just a heads-up: make sure your voltage matches your control panel. If you don’t, you’ll burn through your elements pretty quickly. And if you’re installing a big array of these, keep an eye on your power draw. Your wiring needs to be able to handle the peak load without tripping a breaker. The honest trade-offs Here is the real deal. These are usually a simple drop-in replacement for older IR systems, and they heat up way faster than ceramic heaters. That means less time standing around waiting for the machine to warm up. But, there’s a catch. Quartz is brittle. If your machine vibrates too much or the clamps are a bit loose, those tubes will crack.**Check your mounts.**Seriously. Also, because far-infrared is all about penetration, it doesn’t have that “instant punch” you get from short-wave IR. If you’re just doing a super thin flash-dry coating, you might notice the ramp-up feels a little slower than you’re used to.
