
IR Lamps vs. Hot Air: Which one actually works for your M&R?
If you’re trying to figure out whether to stick with hot air or move to IR lamps for drying your ink, it really comes down to one thing: how you’re getting that heat into the fabric. Hot air is basically just blowing a warm breeze. It heats the air, and then the air (hopefully) heats the ink. It’s a slow process. IR lamps are different. They use radiant energy to hit those ink molecules directly. It’s the difference between waiting for a room to warm up and stepping into the sunlight on a cold day. You feel it instantly. The science bit (kept simple) Our IR lamps are designed to drop right into M&R flash systems. We use short-wave or medium-wave emitters because they don’t just sit on the surface—they penetrate the ink layer fast. This means your ink polymerizes or evaporates in a few seconds. Compare that to hot air systems, which are notorious for “cold spots.” To get an even cure with air, you need massive blowers and a lot of luck. With IR, you get a concentrated hit of heat exactly where you need it. Getting the specs right Here is where you have to be careful. When you’re swapping out those OEM tubes for ours, the voltage and wattage have to match your transformer’s output perfectly. If you plug in a lamp with lower resistance than the original, you’re asking for a blown ballast. That’s a headache nobody wants. We build our tubes to match the M&R current draw exactly so you can just plug them in and get back to work. We also use heavy-wall quartz glass. Why? Because the halogen cycle creates a ton of internal pressure. Cheap glass cracks. Ours takes a beating. Plus, the connectors are beefed up to handle the constant shaking of a moving conveyor line. The reality of using IR Now, IR is fast, but it’s aggressive. If your conveyor is crawling along too slowly, you’re going to scorch your garments. It’s a balancing act. You have to dial in your line speed to match the lamp’s wattage. The upside? Maintenance is a breeze. You don’t have to spend your weekend scrubbing clogged hot air ducts. When a tube goes, you just swap it. And here is a pro tip:**Keep your reflectors polished.**Dust is the enemy of heat density. If your reflectors are dirty, your heat drops. Keep them clean, and your lamps will last way longer.
